Dr. J. Roddick Byers contracted tuberculosis in Sherbrook, Canada, where he had been overworking. He took the rest cure at the Trudeau Sanatorium where he developed a good relationship with Dr. Hugh Kinghorn, an ex-patient himself who served on the ward and was devoted to the study of tuberculosis.

D. Lorne McGibbon sent Byers up to Ste-Agathe to get the Laurentian Sanatorium started in 1908. The three men worked together for the next few years to assure that their plans for a hospital would be realized.
